Diffraction and Interference is a useful, application designed to display Single and Double Slits that show diffraction and interference patterns from a single slit, double sources and double slits. The wavelength of the source is set with the default 0.02 and can be adjusted anywhere from 0.003 to 0.5. The separation of the slits is the separation between the slit in x- and y-directions, and is set with the default value of 6 and can be adjusted anywhere from 0.5 to 9. The slit width is the width of the opening of the slit and is adjusted from 0.05 to 1.5.
Directions:
‘Left’ adjusts the left slit.
‘Right’ adjusts the right slit.
‘Up’ adjusts the top slit.
‘Down’ adjusts the bottom slit.
Diffraction and Interference Features:
The only feature for this application is shown in the screenshot above. There is an up arrow and a down arrow which allow the user to slide up or down in the table to toggle between slit and diffraction/interference. The user can also adjust the slits’ width, separation and distance to the screen and select which source to use (single or double).

For light to be diffracted the real part of the wave must be out of phase (acquire phase angle) with the imaginary part. The relationship between the phase difference for any given plane of the wave is as follows:

A Construction
The first slit is constructed from scratch, then the second image is created by
placing the second slit behind the first slit, the width of the second slit
is half the width of the first slit. The distance between the first and
second slits is the known separation of the two slits. Next, the phases of
the two slits are put into relationship with each other. When the slits are
moved to the screen, we can see a number of diffraction patterns depending
on the phase difference between the two slit images. There are two
situations. If the phase difference between the images is an integral number

One of the simplest cases of diffraction is to consider a light source, a single slit, and a screen. A light source can be a lamp, laser, LED, or a traditional light bulb. The light source emits light as a point source. As the light travels toward the screen, it may spread out into a thin beam. The screen is either glass or plastic. At the screen is a single slit that is some distance away from the light source and the screen. The slit can be horizontal or vertical. The width of the slit on the screen is called the slit width. If the slit is a thin vertical slit on the screen, you get a line on the screen. The Single Slit Experiment
The Single Slit Experiment is the simplest optical experiment that has been performed.
An experiment using a single source slit produces a diffraction pattern when the slit is illuminated by a beam of light. The pattern appears on a photographic negative plate and on a piece of paper printed from the negative. For intense rays of light the pattern usually consists of several bright spots separated by dark lines. The lines divide the image into bright and dark or light and dark areas, corresponding to the light and dark bars of the alternating amplitude grating shown in Fig. 3. Single slit diffraction patterns are beautiful and impressive, but they are difficult to produce because the single slit must act as a collimator for the illuminating light. If you look carefully at the diffraction pattern of Fig. 3, you will find that it consists of two parts. The diffraction pattern of Fig. 4 is the source and slit area. It looks like a floor tile with a cross hatch pattern on it. Where the bright and dark lines meet at the top and bottom of the image, you will see bright and dark areas. These are the images of the bright and dark slits. The surface of the tile represents the image of a single source slit.
The Double Slit Experiment
The Double Slit Experiment consists of two slits in the object plane. If the slits are not close together, the interference pattern appears as a set of bright and dark points on a photographic negative or on a picture of the negative. The double slit patterns can be simplified by taking an image of the image with the slits. Because the slits are close together, two bright points, a bright circle and a dark circle appear instead of the individual bright and dark lines of Fig. 2. The bright circle and the dark circle represent images of the slits. If you take a picture of the picture, you will find that these images are slightly different in size from one another. The difference in size is due to the fact that the slits are not aligned exactly perpendicular to the image plane.
